How Much Cash Should You Bring to Brimfield?

For why cash matters so much here — and what negotiating with it actually looks like — see our full breakdown of Brimfield's cash culture. This post is just the practical question: how much should you actually bring, and can you count on getting more once you're there?

Parking cash is separate from spending cash

Budget for this first, before you even think about what you're buying: most lots run $10–$20, cash only, and it's a different pile of money than your shopping budget. Don't let a $15 parking fee eat into the $20 you were saving for a booth negotiation.

Don't count on the on-site ATMs

There are ATMs scattered around the fields, but treat them as a backup, not a plan: reports describe a $200 maximum per transaction, plus the usual out-of-network fees. Get cash — and gas — before you arrive rather than counting on finding a working machine once you're in the fields. The town of Brimfield and nearby Sturbridge have bank ATMs if you genuinely run out.

So how much should you actually bring?

There's no single right number — it depends entirely on what kind of trip you're planning:

Split it across a few envelopes or pockets rather than one visible roll — partly for security, partly because it's easier to negotiate convincingly when you're visibly working with a fixed amount rather than an open-ended one.

A checkbook as backup, cards as a maybe

Bring a checkbook — several longtime vendors specifically mention taking checks even when they won't take a card. More booths accept cards than a few years ago, especially larger ones, but plenty of smaller, old-school dealers still don't, and the ones who do often negotiate less on a card transaction. Don't plan around card acceptance at any specific booth.

The bottom line

Bring more cash than you think you need, get it before you leave home, and keep parking money separate from shopping money in your head. The on-site ATMs exist, but they're a $200-capped, fee-bearing backup — not a reason to travel light.

A note on this post: the parking rates, ATM limits, and cash-culture details above are compiled from published Brimfield guides and visitor accounts — we haven't visited ourselves yet. We're going in person this September and will update this page with firsthand numbers after that trip.
